In June 2017, I set off to complete my Eagle Scout project. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. Two of my grandfathers, my uncle, and my father were all Eagle Scouts, and I wanted to do the same. Earning the Eagle Scout rank involves completing every previous rank, completing a long list of merit badges, and planning and executing a service project. This project must be planned, organized, and led solely by the scout.
Near where I grew up in Westcliffe, Colorado, there is a wolf rescue called Mission: Wolf. They take in found wolf and wolf-dog hybrids that were once owned by people and then abandoned. I thought they would be a great organization to talk to and see if they had anything that could be turned into a service project. I met with them and determined that I could build some fencing for a new enclosure. My plan was to first fundraise to pay for the required materials and supplies. Then, I would take my troop up near the reserve, and we would camp and work the weekend.
The project went very well, and it was a great learning experience for all of us. The troop got to learn more about Mission: Wolf and what they do to help protect these animals. I also learned a lot about initiative in leadership and the full scope of what a leader has to do. I learned a lot about communication and coordinating people to do different tasks. It is an experience that I will cherish forever and am proud that I can call myself an Eagle Scout.
